The phrase “tie goes to the runner” is a popular interpretation of baseball rules, but it’s not entirely accurate. The rulebook of baseball does not explicitly mention a tie situation.
Major League Baseball umpire Tim McClelland has written that the concept of a tie at a base does not exist, and that a runner either beats the ball or does not. In 2009, umpire Mark Dewdeny, a contributor for Bleacher Report, citing McClelland, also rejected the idea of a tie, and further commented that even if a “physicist couldn’t make an argument one way or the other” from watching an instant replay, the runner would still be out.
So, in essence, the concept of a “tie” in baseball is not officially recognized. The runner must beat the ball to the base to be safe.

The 3rd and 4th place teams battled it out at Alga today and it was a close one all the way. After the first 5 innings, Carlsbad Inn had surged ahead by 7 to lead 11 to 4 over Gaspar. But, with Christine threatening the manager to play better “or else”, the Gaspar bats came alive in both the 6th and 8th innings, scoring 5 runs in each, assisted by hard hit home runs by Bocai and Angel Torres. A rare double play on an outfield assist to second base by Leigh Peterson prevented a big inning from CBI in the bottom of the 8th. On to the bottom of the ninth with CBI trailing by 2. Singles by Jimmy Smyth and sub Steve Sexton put runners on the corners with 1 out. Up comes hot hitting Rick Skidmore who hits a shot that just skips past the outfielders, rolling to the fence for a walk off 3 run homer to win the game.
Stars for Gaspar included lead off batter Leigh Patterson (3 for 4), Tom Benacka (4 for 4), Dave Ash (3 for 4), Bocai with a home run to the fence, Angel Torres (3 for 4 and a home run), and Greg Lorton (2 for 3). Great all around defense by Gaspar kept them in the game, in particular pitcher Ken Thompson who snagged 3 hot line drives.
CBI was lead by Dan Hacker (4 for 4), Gene Smith (4 for 4 with a home run and 4 RBIs), Larry Wadalavage (2 for 4 with a home run and 4 RBIs), and the aforementioned Rick Skidmore (3 for 4 with 4 RBIs and the game winning home run). Also contributing were Randy Agadoni and Steve Sexton with 3 hits each. On defense, the CBI infield turned 4 double plays to keep the game close. Many thanks to Steve Sexton for subbing once again for CBI.
Village Pie played a very competitive game vs TPP today. They led 7-3 after 2 innings. Their TPP hosts battled for 5 in the third to tie the game. Both teams scored one in the fourth before TPP gained a 3 run lead that they held until the top of the 7th inning, when VP lashed out with 4 runs to gain a one run lead. TPP scored once in the 7th to tie. Unfortunately, VP's scoring was over. TPP's five runs in the 8th was all that was needed to secure the 19-14 victory.
Village Pie was feisty all game in the field. They turned four double plays in eight innings. Pat Steele was crafty on the mound. The offense was led by Jeff Payton & Donato's 4/4 games, and Laurie Mills' 4/5 on top of all that running and defense.
That Pizza Place had a very balanced attack. All twelve hitters had at least 2 hits. The timeless David Buck and John McDaniels had 3 hits. Karl Stern had 3 hits plus 3 RBI's. Mr. Riserbato and Mr. LaChimia had 3 hits, 3 RBI's, and a homer each. Mr. Brand was 4 for 5 as leadoff hitter.
It was a defensive and pitching battle between PPB’s Russ Roopenian, who also had 2 key hits and PG’s Rich Keefer, who added 3 hits for the first 6 innings with the Brewery up 8-4. Good thing PPB got 6 runs in the Open inning cause Plotkin added 4 in the bottom of the 9th.
Leading hitters for PPB were David Ward 5/5 w/a double & 3 RBIs, Teddy Badillo 4/5 w/a double & 4 RBIs, Rich Lavacot and Mark Lehman 3/5 w/5 RBIs hit his first home run of the season, Craig Wheatcroft added 2 doubles & 2 RBIs, Super sub Dave Grull, Dan Frye & Joel Kudren each added 2 hits, Rich Reynolds knocked in 2 runs and John Symanski made a lot of catches playing Centerfield.
Leading hitters for PG were Pat Discoll 4/4 while making several catches in Left Center Field, Cathy McDonald & Steve Newberg were 3/4 along with Oscar Castillo & Oscar Lara, who both added 3 RBIs each.
Big thanks to Jimmie Martin, who umpired a perfect game.

Two of the Senior League’s premium pitchers locked horns today at Pine and although the score might not indicate, it was a superbly pitched game by both Bob Baptista for Worden Williams and Steve Berry for Nucci’s. Illustrating the efficiency of both pitchers, neither issued a walk and the game took only about one and half hours to play, . In the end, however, WW came away with a 15 – 6 victory. Although Berry held the Dubs to just three runs over the last five innings, Baptista held NUC scoreless over the last five.
On offense, each Dubs player had at least one hit, but three-run homers by Bob Porter (who was also 3/3 with 5 RBIs) and Cord Cameron, whose eyes lit up when he saw the outfield overload the right side and promptly poked one over the left centerfielder’s head, led the hit parade. Bob Buscher was back to his old form, going 4/4; Pat Hourigan was 3/4 (who also showed some slick fielding at second), Oscar Delgado 3/4 and Robert Tahimic 3/4 also exhibiting a steady hand in left field. The infield turned three double plays, further solidifying their defensive prowess.
NUC also exhibited a healthy offensive output featuring home runs by Kevin Davidge and Dennis O’Hern, a perfect day at the plate by Roney Lewis and 2/3 hitting by Frank Weishaar and 3/4 for Al Castenada.
Much thanks to Phil Kay for subbing for WW and to Jack Schwarzel who officiated at home and on the bases.
Moving into the heart of the final cycle of the schedule, Gaspar and Pizza Port met at Alga 3 as two of the three teams with the strongest chance for the fourth playoff part (Plotkin Group being the other although Hennessey’s and Village Pie Shoppe are still mathematically in it).
Gaspar started early with a narrow 2-1 lead after one, but Pizza Port got it into gear in the second and third innings to lead 8-3. Gaspar started to chip away but Pizza Port answered to lead 10-5 after five and a half. In the bottom of the sixth, Gaspar sent six to the plate to score five runs to tie. Pizza Port took back the lead and led 12-11 after seven innings. Taking their motto (“keep the fan excited”) to heart, Gaspar scored five in the bottom of the eighth to lead 16-12. Pizza Port scored one in the top of the ninth, but it was too little too late.
David Ward led Pizza Port going 4 for 5 with a home run. Rich Lavacot, sub Jimmy Smyth, Ken McGehee, and John Symanski each had three hits and one of John’s hits was a home run.
For Gaspar, Brian Turner was 4 for 4 with a home run, five RBIs, and scoring in each at-bat. Dave Ash was 3 for 3 with a home run plus an intentional walk. Dave Bosque was 2 for 2 with a home run plus a walk. Tom Benacka and Bocai were both 3 for 4 with a home run each. Jerry Galiley and Skip Moyer were both 2 for 3. And Ken Thompson rounded of the six-run home run barrage with one of his own.
With Tuesday’s games complete, Gaspar is two games ahead of Pizza Port and three ahead of Plotkin for fourth place. Importantly, Gaspar swept their three games against Pizza Port (with one rainout), winning each game by three runs. But both in individual games and the season overall, no lead is safe for Gaspar. It isn’t over until it’s over.
Thanks to Gene LaChimia for an uneventful job of umpiring (the best kind). And thanks to Jimmy Smyth for subbing for Pizza Port and doing an excellent job of scouting Carlsbad Inn’s next opponent, Gaspar. 😊
“Victory is often the difference between those with resources from those without.”
I guess the above quote exemplifies the problem faced by Hennessey’s in their game today. Down four highly rated players and facing Worden Williams, the Henns kept it close but eventually succumbed 22-12. Through five, the Henns were only down by three, but from the sixth on, it was all WW, outscoring the Henns 12 to 5. Typical of the way it has been all season for the Dubs, they started out slow offensively, came on strong in the middle innings and won going away with a strong defense.
Leading the way offensively was “everybody” with the least productive player having two hits and the most productive four hits. The scorebook also revealed that ten of the twelve players scored at least one run. Of particular note was the hitting of John Vivrett (“JV”), who went 3/4, with two RBIs and three runs scored, but more importantly he anchored the lower half of the order to turn it over to the stronger hitters at the top of the lineup. Bob Baptista turned in another fine pitching performance as well as providing ground crew services along with Lloyd Thorne to make Calavera ready for play.
For Hennessey’s, Sub Bill Codner and regulars, D. Santana, K. Richards, J. Goertzen and M. Hart provided more than adequate offense for the Henns.
Thanks to subs Bill C for Hennessey’s and to Larry Wadalavage for the Dubs who both lived up to their offensive and defensive reputations.
And let’s not one forget ump Mike Brower, who called ‘em as he saw ‘em, aka with fairness and accuracy.

Nice day at pine for the Game. The Draft defense was so much better today, Holding the Groupers to Only 2 runs for six innings. In the 7th still only 3 more, for a total of 5. Meanwhile the drafters had amassed 10 runs. Hummmm Maybe we should have just played 7???
In the top of the 8th the grouper bats managed to tie up the game 10 all. No answer from the Drafters in the bottom of 8.
But once again the Draft gloves managed to shut them down in the top of the 9th. So all we needed was one run From the bottom of the order.
So who do you call when you want a job done right the first time?? For little to no pay? Answer is a woman (if you don't believe me ask the one next to you!) Nanci, Kathy and Linda all got hits. Okay so they allowed Walt to bat as well and he got one also. To score a walk off win. Take that you Male Chauvinist Pigs.
Final score Draft 11 Plotkin 10. Increasing our wins By 20%.
Dave Frantz was 4-4 Randy Baird, Gary McBride, and Walt Webber were all 3-4.
For the groupers Oscar C and Oscar l Plus (I need to call H.R. on her) Cathy M were all 3-4 as well
